Soft Pastel and Oil Painter based on Long Island
About
I am a landscape and figurative artist from New York City, living and working on Long Island for 35 years. I’m known for observational art drawn from close contemplation of the natural world and the human figure, and the endless moments of beauty and power they offer.
I paint in oil and soft pastel and draw in charcoal and pastel. My paintings are notable for intense color, bold form and the emotions they evoke in the viewer.
I'm a member of the Huntington Arts Council, The Art League of Long Island, The Art Guild of Port Washington and Mills Pond Gallery of St. James.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is inspired by the beauty and quiet surprises the natural world, whether in a familiar backyard landscape or in places and vistas I discovered while traveling. I often sketch outdoors and through my drawings or photography, I collect visual notes of action, quiet serenity or the sumptuous colors of a sunset. Back in my studio, I translate my visual notes into paintings, combining them with memory, perception and imagination to capture fleeting moments, stunning scenes and vibrant figures.
The figure, especially life drawing, is always central in my work. I'm drawn to the figure for its vitality, fragility, strength, energy, rhythm and expressive gesture. The human body is a unique, varied physical landscape and demands much of the artist who strives to capture its substance and spirit on paper. As each piece of work evolves, the creative process is driven by a synthesis of perception, observation, feeling and imagination.
Oils and pastel pigments offer unique qualities and lush color; they are my vehicle to portray subtle or bold images or figures. I'm moved by the energy in nature, flowers, fields, sea, skies and figures. My work explores them all, particularly as they’re influenced by light and atmosphere. I'm thrilled to render glowing, breathing portrayals.
